  4. Enclosure The Good… …the Bad Loss of many jobs Small farms could not compete with the larger ones Villagers moved to the city to find new jobs • Farm output rose • Profits increased • Food surplus

  5. B. Selective Breeding • 1. Robert Bakewell introduced selective breeding. • 2. This meant only allowing the fittest and animals to mate. 3. In 1710 the average weight for cattle was 370 lbs. 1795 - it was 800 lbs.

  6. C. Dikes Allows fields to remain fertile rather than “swampy”

  8. E. Marling • The use of chemicals to make the soil good enough to plant in. • Rejuvenation of the soil

  9. F. Crop Rotation 1. Each area of land would be split into four sections. The crop that was grown on each field would be rotated so that different nutrients would be taken from the land. a. First year, turnips or another root crop would be grown b. Second year, barley was grown in the field c. Third year, clover or a grass crop was grown d. Fourth year, wheat was grown in the field

  12. Population Multiplies What Happened? Why did this happen? Reduced risk of famine due to surplus of food. People ate healthier and started living longer. Better hygiene, better sanitation, and medical advancements reduced the amount of death from disease. • Population in Great Britain almost doubled between 1700 & 1800 from 5 million to 9 million. • In Europe it rose from 120 million to 180 million. • Growth that had never occurred before…
