History • St. Ignatius of Loyola suggested a Christmas novena to commemorate the Holy Family's journey to Bethlehem • (1580)St. John of the Cross prepared a more elaborate version of the travel
History • (1587) Spanish missionaries introduced it in Mexico. • Mexicans made it a 9 day Christmas ritual called posadas. • Mexican sailors from the galleons during Spanish colonization brought the custom to Tagalog and Bicol towns.
Ritual • Images of St. Joseph and Mary are wheeled out from the Church while accompanied by two singers who will vocalize their parts • They stop at 3-4 homes that represent the inns and in each sing their plight and request for lodgings.
Ritual • The innkeepers represented by a choir inform them that the inns are already filled to capacity. • In the end, the Holy Couple are wheeled into the church for Nativity.
Purpose • To commemorate the Holy family’s journey to Bethlehem • The procession narrates what happened when Mary was about to give birth to Jesus

Different versions of Panuluyan: • Maytinis – Imus, Cavite • Daygon – Bisaya • Panawagan – Cavite & Batangas • Pastores – Cebu, Leyte, Bohol, Negros & Panay
Additional info Panuluyan is now widely known through the OFW’s and Filipinos that celebrate it abroad that it would reach different parts of Amerika like Hawaii, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, Washington DC and New York.
