Expectations for Students All students will • Come to class on time with materials, homework, and current work. • Follow classroom routines and rules. • Complete class work and homework on time. • Respect classmates and teacher. • Work to the best of his/her abilities.
We Believe: • reading is the most powerful tool for learning. • active readers are betterreaders. • you learn to read by reading. • you learn to write by writing. • you learn to communicate & use language effectively by talking about your reading and writing with others.
What is a Lexile Measure? A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text, a book or magazine article. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an "L" after it . For example, 880L is 880 Lexile.
Materials • Planner – please bring it and USE IT! • AVID binder • Independent Reading Book (based on their Lexile) • Great Books packet • Post-its • Highlighter • Pens/pencil
Curriculum • Great Books • Shared Inquiry - Socratic Seminar • Procedure • Student’s role - Participation • My role - Assessment
Grading Policy • Students will be graded on the following: • Classwork(40%) • Shared inquiry discussions, tests, and quizzes • Independent Reading (25%) • Reading Logs & Readers Responses, Book Hooks • Written Assessments (20%) • Writing about reading • Homework (15%)
Homework • WEEKLY Reading Log • Independent Reading work • Responses based on reading • Homework is expected to be handed in on the scheduled due date.
How Parents Can Help • Check the planner • Check the monthly calendar • Check supplies • Ask questions about Great Books • Check the Independent Reading Book • Encourage your child to take advantage of the Homework Center • Check the quality of their work
