Harlem What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? A Dream Deferred

Lines 3-4 “Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?” • A dream deferred may dry up, very much like a grape that loses its essence and turns into a raisin.

Lines 7-9 “Does it stink like rotten meat?/ Or crust and sugar over—/ like a syrupy sweet?” • An abandoned dream may smell like rotten meat, implying the dream has spoiled. • It may also take on the quality of something sickly sweet, which means that it has become nauseating and very unappealing to the dreamer.
Lines 10-11“Maybe it just sags/Like a heavy load.” • A deferred dream may weigh the dreamer down like a heavy load. • A dream unfulfilled is burdensomeand it is a ponderous burden that weighs heavily on the dreamer.

Final Thoughts: Langston Hughes dreamed for freedom and equality for all human beings. Everyone should have access to their dreams.
