General Anxiety Disorder • An anxiety disorder that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable often worries about everyday things that often aren't real worries
History • 1980’s American psychiatric association changed its classification by separating anxiety neurosis in GAD • Sigmund Frued observed “free floating anxiety” in early 1900’s
symptoms • Constant worries running though your head • Inability to relax, enjoy quit time, or be by yourself • Having trouble falling asleep because your mind wont relax • feeling edgy • Symptoms must last at least 6 months to be diagnosed
Treatments • Medians- antidepressants • Psychotherapy- talking to a consoler about stress • Benzodiazepines are prescribed for generalized anxiety disorder and show beneficial effects in the short term • Tranquilizers can also be used to alleviate some of the physiological symptoms of anxiety although it can make you feel sleepy and lacking in energy
Occurrence • Approximately 6.8 million American adults experience GAD • United States approximly3.1 percent of people age 18 and over in a given year • About 5% of people will develop GAD over the course of their lifetime. • This illness usually begins when individuals are in their early 20s. Panic and generalized anxiety occur in about 0.7% of children in any one-year period, up to 20% over the course of childhood.
