  2. NCCS Data Goals • Produce cleaned, checked, organized datasets • Make them easy to access and use • Promote research and encourage use of data • Provide assistance to researchers

  3. NCCS Files • 800,000+ organizations classified by NTEE purpose/activity codes • 140+ data files available • All tax exempt organizations -- Business Master Files from IRS • Based on IRS Forms 990 -- Core Files, GuideStar-NCCS Database, IRS Statistics of Income Samples • And More: Unified Database of Arts Organizations; Individual Taxpayer Charitable Giving Data • Learn More: • See the “Data” section of our website for details • Read the 20-page “NCCS Data Guide”

  5. Table Wizards: Customize a Standard Table, by State or Nonprofit Type

  6. Sample Report:Human Services in Arkansas

  7. Reports Easily Copied & Pasted into Excel

  8. NCCS Data Web:For Those Who Need More • Create custom reports, univariate statistics, data extracts • Find answers to more detailed inquiries • Download individual organizational records • Combine multiple data files

  9. Full Online Documentation for Each File

  10. Sample Documentation

  11. Report Builder Tool • Choose up to 3 row or cross-tab grouping fields • Recode categorical with value labels • Recode continuous variables by ranges • Choose from a wide variety of summary calcuations: means, medians, quartiles… • Create custom calculated fields • Create custom filters – “Rural orgs in New England that lost money last year” • Customize headings, load easily into Excel

  12. Sample Report Output

  13. Reports Easily Copied & Pasted into Excel

  14. Create Crosstab Reports

  15. Report Wizard Guides Users Through Creation of Report

  16. The Variable Picker makes it easy for users to find the right field/variable

  17. Users can search for key words in variable descriptions and names

  18. Labels for Key Variables (State, NTEE) Automatically Added

  19. Select Predefined Ranges for Grouping Large and Small Organizations

  20. In This Example, Seven Categories Highlighting Differences Among Large Organizations Has Been Selected

  21. Define Up to 7 Summary Columns These could be as simple as the Total Expenses, or as complex as the medians or 25th percentile for a calculated field (“total revenue minus total expenses”)

  22. Customize the Report Title and Footer, and More…

  23. Use a Standard Filter or Create a Custom Filter to Limit the Scope of the Report

  24. Creating a Custom Filter: Select Variables, Operators, and Values from Dropdown Lists…or Enter Manually

  25. Click on “Pick Value” and a list of values is displayed…

  26. Complex Filters:This filter limits records to Arts Organizations in the DC Metro Area

  27. Extract Data • Download data in the format of your choice • Download all records or apply a filter • Select a few variables, variable groups, or all variables • Formats include Excel, SAS, Stata, SPSS, dBase, and a variety of ASCII formats (e.g., for Microsoft Access) • Compressed (gzip) file produced for quick download • No email clog: customized data dictionary & link to data

  28. Select the Fields you want to Extract

  29. Select the Output Format: ASCII (many styles), dBase, Excel, SAS, SPSS, Stata

  30. The Extract Includes a Link to a Compressed File (gzip format) and a Custom Data Dictionary

  31. Click on the Link to Download

  32. A Sample Excel Extract

  33. Statistics Tool • Quick summary of univariate statistics • Choose a single variable and specify a filter • Means, medians, non-zero values • Standard deviation, variance • Minimum, maximum • Quartiles, quintiles, and deciles

  34. Sample Output

  35. Use Same Tools for Picking a Variable and Creating a Filter

  36. Record Viewer Tool • Display a single record • Show variable labels and contents

  37. View Individual Records If Needed

  38. Table Browser • Display records in an “Excel-like” grid • Drill down to view individual records • Customize the fields you view • Apply a filter • Single-click sorting by any displayed field (largest to smallest)

  39. A Sample Table Browser screen

  40. Data Views • Link multiple data sets • Use in other tools • Feels like Microsoft Access “Relationships” • Create a panel comparing variables across years • Link to special lookup files (NAICS, SIC) • Compare data for same orgs from different sources • Select specific variables, variable groups, or all variables

  41. Classification • NTEE organization-level classification • National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities • Purpose, type and major function of orgs. • Translates to federal government’s more general NAICS codes • Nonprofit Program Classification (NPC) • Program level activity codes • 1 mil.+ programs • NCCS implemented using auto-coding systems

  42. Classification Quality • NTEEs • 90% at major group level • All records given a NTEE confidence code • 800,000 records with firm codes, another million with “draft” auto-codes • IRS Activity Codes • NCCS discourages use • Old IRS self-coding system • Useful information • 3 per org. assigned: 1st is best

  43. NTEE Classification • National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) created in early 1980s • Hierarchical: • 10 major categories: From arts, environment, education, health care, human services, & lots of “others” • Broken into major groups (letters of the alphabet) • 600+ “decile” and “centile” codes • Example: • Major group “P”: Human Services (general) • “P6”: Emergency Assistance • “P62”: Victims’ Services
