UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes “A Thematic Doctoral Programme is created where a group of doctoral supervisors from distinct disciplines work together to create a coherent shared experience for their doctoral students, establishing a programme of advanced education, training and research focused on an identified theme.” UCD Academic Regulation 15.4 www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies
UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes Benefits • Common intellectual purpose, collaboration and mutual support • Enhanced sense of community • Strengthen student’s research through shared practices • Tailored discipline-specific taught modules particularly for new and emerging areas of research ( Bioinformatics & Systems Biology, Computational Social Science, Bionanointeractions) • Cohort recruitment and admission • Aiding competition for research funding nationally and internationally www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies
UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes Structure • UCD Structure facilitates local variations across the university but typically has 5-10 academic members of staff 10-PhD and a number of postdoctoral fellows associated with the programmes • Essential Elements • Research Teams; multi-disciplinary research development and interactive activities • Education and Skills training incorporating taught modules and research and professional skills courses www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies

UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes Administration • Challenges: • High administrative load • Identity/ownership of the PhD student within the university • Perception by students not registered to a thematic programme • Possible extra credit requirements • Conflict of programme requirements with local practices www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies

UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes Administration • One academic staff member must be designated as Director of the Thematic Doctoral Programme. • Responsibilities include: • Design of the Thematic Doctoral Programme is in line with the PhD Regulations, • Seek approval of the host School(s)/Research Institute(s), relevant Graduate School Board(s) and the University Graduate Programmes Board etc • Nominate and recruit PhD students to the Thematic Doctoral Programme in accordance with the Academic Regulations (16.3); • In the case of a Thematic Doctoral Programme where substantive original research does not begin until after a period of training, the Director must recommend a provisional supervisor for the PhD student; • Recommend nominees for Doctoral Studies Panels of participating students to the appropriate Head(s) of School/ Director(s) of Research Institute(s) for approval by the relevant Graduate School Board; • Oversee the operation and monitor the reporting of the Doctoral Studies Panels of participating students; • Co-ordinate arrangements with the appropriate school(s) for transfer assessments and thesis examinations; • Conduct a review of the Thematic Doctoral Programme at appropriate intervals and make such a review available to the relevant graduate school board(s). www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies
UCD Thematic Doctoral Programmes Supports in place • What researchers will participate in the programme in the first instance- and from which institutions? • What kinds of research projects can you identify within the programme appropriate to PhD-level research? • What education and skills training do you envisage as necessary, and of this, what education and skills training might be provided from within the programme? What might be needed from other sources? • What kind of structure do you envisage for the management of the programme? • Would you consider students rotating between different and distinct research groups in the first year of their doctoral studies? • Will there be an opportunity for students to have internships in industry/ government agencies/national institutes/archives? • Will you be looking to have adjunct supervisors of the students from outside the formal Higher Education Sector? • What supervisory structures are appropriate to ensure that each PhD student’s progression is properly mentored • Are any exceptions necessary from existing UCD regulatory requirements – if so, what are these and what is their justification to the success of the programme? • Outline frequency of module delivery • Do you have a mechanism for new academics join the programme? W e.g. in one example they advertise for supervisors to put forward proposals for Phd Projects in Jan for the Sept intake. The programme Committee consider the applications and choose the most appropriate. www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies
