Chapter 25 Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic Waves • Consist of an electric field and a magnetic field at right angles to each other and to the direction of the wave.
Electromagnetic Waves (Remember) • Transverse waves • Carry energy • Do not require matter • Do not cause matter to vibrate • Cause electromagnetic & magnetic fields to vibrate.
Electromagnetic Waves • Created by charged particles moving back & forth, creating electric and magnetic fields that vibrate. • The source of EMWs is charged particles changing speed or direction.
Electromagnetic Waves • EMWs travel at the speed of light, 299792.458 km/s or 186000 mi/s.
Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) • All EMW travel at the same speed. • The waves are arranged in order of wavelength or frequency on the EMS
Electromagnetic Spectrum • Remember: v = λ x F • Because all EMWs travel at the same speed, the wavelength and frequency change. • The longest λ have the lowest frequency. • The shortest λ have the highest frequency.
Electromagnetic Spectrum • An arrangement of electromagnetic waves in order of wavelength and frequency. • Long λ,low freq. to short λ, high freq. • Amount of energy increases with freq.
