  1. Interrogation techniques How do you get someone to admit guilt?

  2. Today… • Consider what are Interrogation Techniques • Develop some thoughts on when Interrogation is / is not appropriate • Summarise the key study to support the theory • Look at a real life Interrogation transcript

  3. What do we know? • How is an interrogation different to an interview? • Under what circumstances does an interrogation occur and what is its purpose? • What does the stereotypical interrogation consist of? (think TV and movies) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uSOiu_WUDw

  4. Common sense challenge • Which of the statements that I am going to read out do you believe are true and which are false? Make a note of which you believe are true and false • “Effective interrogation involves…”

  5. Key Study Inbau et al • Developed approach to interrogation based on the idea of presenting criminals with a mass of damaging facts • Therefore they would have no choice but to confess

  6. Key Theory: Inbau’s 9 steps • Direct confrontation • Chance to shift blame • Never allow suspect to deny guilt • Ignore excuses • Reinforce sincerity, eye contact, first names • If suspect cries, infer guilt • Pose the “alternative question” • Admit guilt in front of witness • Document admission

  7. Real-life interrogation cases http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUNJBwO2BoA

  8. Points to consider… Read the study ~ make summary notes ~ consider evaluation points ~ some guidance… • Can these techniques be justified? • Are there any types of offenders who might be particularly vulnerable? • Could they lead to false confessions? • Can you apply the situational / dispositional explanation to this theory to explain why it is an effective technique? • Why might someone be advised to remain silent throughout this process?
