  3. Why so many immigrants? • Wars or smaller conflicts in Germany, England, Russia and other countries created hardship for many foreigners.

  4. Economic Downturn • Countries like Ireland and Italy suffered from economic problems in the 1800s. • There were few jobs and no way to borrow money.

  5. Famine • In the 1840s, Ireland experienced a potato famine. • Since potatoes were the primary food for the Irish, thousands starved during this time.

  6. Religious Persecution • Jews, Protestants and Catholics were treated with discrimination and violence in parts of Europe.

  7. Industrialization • Meanwhile, America had tons of new jobs in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

  8. Religious Freedom • In America, religious freedom was protected by law.

  9. Political Freedom • The U.S. Constitution also guaranteed other rights, including the right to vote.

  10. Capitalism • In America, you could own land or buy a business! • To immigrants, America was a place where anyone could get rich (or die tryin’).

  11. How did it happen? • Millions of immigrants arrived in the USA in the late 19th century and early 20th century from all over the world • Immigrants often experienced and exhilaration at arriving in America

  12. Ellis Island drama • Immigrants also dealt with harsh treatment from officials, and confusion of languages and culture upon arrival in America.

  13. Common Misconceptions • Anyone who wanted to come to America was welcome … no questions asked • Everyone who made it to the USA on a boat was let in • Equal numbers of people came from each country

  14. The Realities • You had to have someone in America to support you • Many people weren’t allowed off the boat due to illness and disease. Ships would stay in harbor for days. • Quotas were created limiting the amount of people allowed in
