Energy Earth Science – 6th Grade Blue Team Mrs. Elliott
Do Now Answer: • Translucent – a condition of matter where light passes through but is scattered so that images are not clearly visible. • Transparent – a condition of matter where light can pass through without the light being scattered.
Radiometer • A radiometer is an energy detector. • How does the light affect the radiometer? The radiometers vane spins when it is exposed to light. • What causes the radiometer to behave as it does? The radiometer serves as an indicator of radiant energy. That is, the radiometer spins when it receives energy produces by an energy source, such as a lightbulb or the Sun.
Reflection Questions #2 a-e. Pg. 91 AMSTI BOOK 2. a: Did you see a general pattern in your data? What is the pattern? b. What did the patterns in the data tell you? c. Why might different groups get different results? d. If the conditions on all planets were the same, except for their distance from the Sun, how would distance affect the amount of energy a planet receives from the Sun? e. Why do you think distance from the Sun affects how much energy a planet receives?
AMSTI BOOK: • Read pg 92Distance and Light
What is Energy? • Matter is made up of invisibly small gravitational attraction. • Energy, on the other hand, possesses name of these characteristics. Evidence of energy is everywhere. All you need to do is look for motion, heat, and light.
The nature of energy ARE very complex, but it is best described by these characteristics: • Energy is the ability to work, • Work is the application of a force through a distance (e.g., carrying yourself and a loaded back pack up a trail), • Force is that which can put matter into motion or stop it if it is already moving (e.g., you are stopped at a stop sign and the car behind you doesn’t see you stop, and can’t stop before colliding with your rear bumper, pushing you into the intersection), and • Motion is a change in distance or direction with time (e.g., making a right hand turn).
Energy can be possessed by an object in two different ways:Kinetic Energy & Potential Energy • If this energy is due to the fact that matter is moving or in use, it is called kinetic energy. • If it is due to the position, structure of matter, or composition, it is called potential energy.
Potential *water behind a dam (due to its position) *car parked on a hill (due to its position) *wound clock spring *gasoline or sugar (due to their chemical composition) Kinetic *falling water *car rolls down a hill *clock hands begins to move *energy appears as movement of the car or muscles & as engine or body heat Potential Energy is Stored Energy and Kinetic Energy is matter that is moving or in use.
Are there different forms of energy? • YES! There are 7 forms of energy (F.Y.I.: remember the name MRS CHEN”) • M – mechanical energy (kinetic energy); its counter part is stored energy (potential energy). • R – radiant energy or sunlight or solar energy • S – sound energy • C – chemical energy • H – heat energy • E – electrical energy • N – nuclear energy
“M” represents potential & kinetic energy • They exists in several forms. These are described in Energy Forms.
