Relaxing Your Fears By Daniel Kim
Background • Joseph Wolpe • Year of Publication : 1961 • Main Idea of his theory • Idea that you cannot experience deep physical relaxation and fear at the same time.
Experiment • Stages • Progressive muscle relaxation • Develop a list of anxiety-producing situations or scenes involving the phobia (anxiety hierarchy). • Continue the process until the client remain in relaxed state. • Reduce their sensitivity to their phobias - desensitization
Results • For the 39 cases, 68 phobias were treated. • Sixty-two of them (in 35 patients) were completely successful. • Success rate: 91% • Average number of sessions needed was 12.3
Controversy • Criticism • Wolpe’s method is only treating symptoms, not the underlying causes of anxiety. • The therapy would not be valuable if the symptom returned. • Response • The follow-up reports of successful desensitization from six months to four years after treatment.
