How are the Common Core Standards different than the Georgia Performance Standards? • Aligned to the highest international and national standards and have an increased emphasis on the following: • Reading more informational and complex texts • Writing to justify thinking and reasoning and writing for more authentic purposes • Engaging in more problem-solving and problem-based learning • Making more real-world, relevant connections • Assessing learning at higher-levels
ELA Standards Advances • Complex texts, quality, range • Evidence that reading is anchored in the college and career readiness (CCR) standards. • Rich reading of literature as well as extensive reading in science, history/social studies, and other disciplines.
Second Grade CurriculumReading • Shared Reading – modeling strategies for reading fluency and comprehension • Guided Reading – Small group – differentiated for individual student needs – fiction and non-fiction text • Literacy Centers – revisit skills in word work, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension
Good Habits Great Readers • Comprehension Strategies- Connecting, Visualizing, Questioning, Determining Importance, Synthesizing, and Inferring • Guided Reading-Small group reading that is differentiated based upon readiness and interests. ***Encourage age appropriate reading*** “5 finger rule”
What is Different about Accelerated Reader? • Web-based • Access to over 139,000 quizzes (more added weekly) • Students still take quizzes at school • *NEW* Renaissance Home Connect for parents to check their child’s progress • *NEW* Book Finder feature lists quizzes • Contains new vocabulary and literacy quizzes to accompany books • 2nd grade expectation of earning 1 point per week
Second Grade CurriculumPHONICS • Words Their Way • Word Sorts for various phonemes • Spelling words will come from word sorts • Words sent home on Mondays, tests will be Fridays • www.spellingcity.com will have words available for extra practice

Why A Standards-Based Report Card? • The purpose of the report card is to show what each student is able to: • Do, • Understand, • Communicate, and • Know based on the Common Core Standards.
Evaluating Student Progress Each student will be assessed to determine his/her progress toward mastery of the standards in the subjects of Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Social Studies, Technology, Mathematics, Science, and Health.

Absences • All absences require a written note signed by a parent. • Our instructional time begins at 7:50. Please make every effort to have your child to school on time.
Transportation • Please send a note on the day your child’s transportation will be changed. • Students are required to be sent home the “usual” way unless I have a written note. • In rare cases, please fax the office or call for emergencies.
