Definition • Body Dysmorphic Disorder a psychological disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with imaginary defects in their appearance.
Symptoms • Characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one's appearance. • Obsessions make it difficult for people with BDD to focus on anything but their imperfections. This can lead to low self-esteem, avoidance of social situations, and problems at work or school. • People may avoid leaving their homes altogether and may even have thoughts of suicide or make a suicide attempt. • Sufferers may perform some type of compulsive or repetitive behavior to try to hide or improve their flaws, although these behaviors usually give only temporary relief. • Important to realize that learning disabilities can effect an individual’s life beyond academics and can impact relationships with family, friends and in the workplace.
Compulsive Behaviors That May Occur • camouflaging (with body position, clothing, makeup, hair, hats, etc). • comparing body part to others’ appearance • seeking surgery • checking in a mirror constantly or avoiding mirrors • skin picking • excessive grooming, exercise, or changing of clothes
Other Information Similar Disorders • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)-denoting or relating to a disorder in which a person feels compelled to perform certain meaningless actions repeatedly in order to alleviate obsessive fears or intrusive thoughts, typically resulting in severe disruption of daily life. • Social Anxiety Disorder-the extreme fear of being scrutinized and judged by others in social or performance situations • Depression • Eating Disorders
CausesNot known specifically as to what causes BDD Some causes of neurological impairments include: • Brain differences. Abnormalities in brain structure or neurochemistry may play a role in causing body dysmorphic disorder. • Genes. Some studies show that body dysmorphic disorder is more common in people whose biological family members also have the condition, indicating that there may be at least one gene associated with this disorder. • Environment. Your environment, life experiences and culture may contribute to body dysmorphic disorder, especially if they involve negative experiences about your body or self-image.
Treatment • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-goal of this treatment is to reduce an individual’s negative thoughts about their appearance and their compulsive behaviors • Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors-work like antidepressants; stop the neurotransmitter serotonin from being reabsorbed by the brain.
