What is PIRCOM? • Goal: Recruit, organize, train, and equip religious leaders in 4 provinces to educate their communities about prevention and treatment of malaria • Create national scale religious coordinating mechanism • Advocate at national level for malaria eradication • Partnership with Ministry of Health, funded by USAID, Mozambican businesses

Results • Creation of 4 provincial PIRCOMs reflecting local religious presence • Multi-religious cascade training model from province to district to local faith leader • More than 27,000 faith leaders trained reaching million members of faith communities • In 2012, 556 new faith leaders were trained as trainers reaching more than 54,000 people.

Lessons Learned • Faith networks built for malaria can be used for other public and primary health concerns, such as TB, Cholera etc • Friendship and common cause was developed across faith lines by working together • Challenges of sustainable financing
Recommendations • Adapt faith networks built for malaria to other public and primary health concerns, such as TB, Cholera etc • Develop mechanisms for multi-sector investment including public and faith based institutions

Introduction to PIRCOM PIRCOM is a faith-based organization committed to improving the life of Mozambican population by mobilization communities to strive for the eliminationof malaria. PIRCOM network members include over 254 different faiths and denominations. In 2012, 556 new faith leaders were trained as trainers reaching more than 54,000 people. PIRCOM organizes local faith leaders with support from Provincial and District PIRCOM Councils. PIRCOM’s network of Faith Leaders currently exists in 6 Provinces and 32 Districts.

PIRCOM Objectives • Secure long term sustainable funding from public, faith based and private partners • Strengthen PIRCOM capacity as stand alone NGO • Build and maintain permanent network of key Faith Leaders (FL) nationwide • Build capacities of FLs and their faith based volunteers and communities for impact on health and wellbeing of local people • Organize for effective, efficient cascade training of Fls and mobilization of communities on key health objectives in districts nationwide • Advocate effectively at national, district and local levels for the health and other needs of local communities • Accurately track and communicate activity and impact of PIRCOM Network • Recruit excellent technical partners in health and development arenas
