Plymouth- The Mayflower • Separatists- want to separate from the Church of England • Move to Holland. • Afraid children losing English heritage, so sail for America • Sail on the Mayflower • Before leaving ship, write and sign Mayflower Compact- agreement to follow laws • Settled in Plymouth, near Massachusetts Bay.

  3. Plymouth Colony • Face early hardships • Helped by Native American- Squanto

  4. Massachusetts- City on a Hill • John Winthrop- wealthy English Puritan • Owns stock in Massachusetts Bay Company • Believes Puritans need to leave Eng. • Wants new colony to be an example • Start several towns, capital- Boston • Within 13 years, 20,000 settlers immigrate (Great Migration)

  5. Church & State • Colonial government supported the Puritan church • Everyone required to attend and tithe • Government regulated behavior • Anyone who spoke out against the government or church was charged with heresy & banished

  6. Rhode Island- Providence • Roger Williams- strict Separatist • Condemned all Anglicans, including Puritans • Said King had no right to take Native American land • 1633- banished from Massachusetts • Went south and started town of Providence • Practiced religious tolerance

  7. Anne Hutchinson • Strict Puritan • Formed prayer group that compared ministers • Claimed God told her which ministers were saved & which were not • Banished as a heretic • Moved to Portsmouth

  8. Rhode Island Founded • 1644- Providence, Portsmouth and other towns form Rhode Island • Called for religious freedom & separation of church & state

Connecticut- Fundamental Orders • Thomas Hooker- asked Massachusetts to move his congregation • Wanted more land • Thought everyone should vote, not just Puritans • Moved to Connecticut River and founded Hartford • Written constitution- Fundamental order of Connecticut • Gave all males the right to vote

  10. Pequot War • 1636- 2 traders killed in Native American territory • MA send troops • Starts Pequot War • Other Native Americans turn on Pequot • Most Pequot killed

  11. King Philip’s War- Metacomet After Pequot war, Native American/colonists relations are good • By 1670s, colonists try to make Naïve Americans more English • 1675- Plymouth tries & executes 3 Wampanoag for murder • Local Wampanoag attack colony • Lead by Metacomet, also called King Phillip

  12. Metacomet • Metacomet killed in 1676 • By 1678, Native Americans are defeated • New England is completely controlled by colonists
