THE SHEPHERD PSALMS • 22---PAST/HE GAVE HIS LIFE. • 23---PRESENT/HE GIVES HIS LOVE. • 24---FUTURE/HE COMES TO REWARD.
“THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD” • The LORD– (JHWH) Jehovah, Jahweh. • “I AM WHO I AM.” Ex. 3:14 • “This is my name forever.” Ex. 3:15.
John 10:11& 14 • “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” • “I am the good shepherd: I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”
JEHOVAH---YHWH • To what can you compare Him? • David was a shepherd too. • “My” shepherd. • “I” shall not want.
THE 23RD PSALM • There are 6 needs that the Great Shepherd will provide for all of His sheep. • 1st—Our physical needs • 2nd—Our spiritual needs • 3rd—Protection in death • 4th—Protection in life • 5th---Life-long blessings • 6th—Eternal blessings
1st--The Shepherd provides for our physical needs (23:1-2). • The LORD (Jehovah) is my shepherd. • Therefore I will not lack… • Green pastures • Still waters • He leads me
John 7:37-38 • “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
2nd--The Shepherd provides forour spiritual needs (23:3). • He restores and refreshes my soul/life. • He leads me in paths (not the usual name for a path. Lit. “wagon tracks”) of righteousness. • Why? For His name’s sake.
Psalm 17:5 • “My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not slipped.”
Prov. 4:11 • “I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.”
Prov. 4:26-27 • “Make level paths for you feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil”
3rd—The Shepherd provides protection in death (23:4). • The valley of the shadow of death. • Through the valley. • You are with me. • You protect and comfort me.
4th—The Shepherd providesprotection in life (23:5). • Prepares a table. • Anoints my head with oil. • My cup runs over.
Genesis 19 • Lot takes care of the 2 angels when the men of Sodom try to abuse them.
John 6:35 • “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 15:11-12 • “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
5th—The Shepherd provideslife-long blessings (23:6). • Goodness • Mercy (KJV)– Love (NIV)--Loving kindness (NAS). KESED (Hebrew). Occurs 250 times in OT. Loyal and faithful love to those who belong together because of God’s covenant. Closest word to the NT-- AGAPE.
6th—The Shepherd provideseternal blessings (23:6b) • The house of the LORD. “In my Father’s house are many mansions…” John 14:1ff • Dwell forever.
