  2. Protecting Your Data • Redundant file storage options • Hardware options • Software options

  3. Hardware Options • DVD • Not suited for frequent backup, good for permanent storage to clear hard drive space. • Flash drive • Good, hold up to 16 Gigs but a little more buys a large USB external drive • 2nd internal HD • Good but not portable, can’t backup 2nd PC or laptop • USB external HD • Best local choice, portable

  4. Software Options • Data Backup & Partition Backup • Data backup utility built-in to XP, Vista, and Windows 7 • Available on the setup CD for addition to XP Home • Many good commercial programs, Acronis, Norton Ghost, others • Most external drives include software • Free Microsoft SyncToy manual application, may be scheduled • Built-in to Vista and Windows 7 • Off site backup such as Laplink Carbonite, secure but requires fast broadband Internet access • My current favorite Rebit, simple and automatic

  5. Other options • RAID systems (mirrored drives) not well suited to home PCs • Drive cloning can be used but better for upgrading • Active third party online suited for critical business data.

  6. In Conclusion • I was going to… • Choose the best option and get ‘er done!
