  9. (In the JMC handbook, this sheet is usually green.) University Requirements (all MSU students) College requirements (all MC students) Take all four SRP core courses. Take one methods course. Selectives / “cluster courses” Take 3 to make a coherent “cluster”--explain to adviser. Many are cross-listed in other MC majors. All MC majors have a “related area” requirement—2 courses outside the major that inform your SRP studies

  10. Crafting a Curriculum • Every Madison major has: (a) 7 required courses (core courses + selectives)(b) a methods requirement(c) a related area • So what REALLY distinguishes majors? 1) CONTENT of courses, especially core courses 2) What do you do in the 7 courses as a whole? 3) What are your CHOICES? 4) How much FLEXIBILITY do you have?

  11. The 7 SRP courses include 4 core courses • Four core courses (all SRP students take) • MC 280 Social Theory and Social Relations • MC 281 Immigrants, Minorities, and American Pluralism • MC 380 Social Policy • MC 498 Senior Seminar (each section has a different topic) • Recent senior seminar topics • The American Dream • The Holocaust in American Memory • Sex, Religion, & Public Policy • Immigration Policy • Legacies of the Civil Rights Movement • Civic Engagement and Community Development in Lansing • Issues in Higher Education: Access, Affordability, Quality • Comparative Black Social Movements • Sex and Law

  12. The 7 SRP courses include 3 “selectives” that make up a “cluster” • SRP students craft the major to best fit their particular interests • Students can select existing clusters of courses or develop their own (examples next slide) • Instead of picking courses from columns, SRP students select a cluster of three courses to build in-depth knowledge about their interests. • about 25-30 different choices • about 2/3 of these choices are cross-listed with another major and/or minor.

  13. Examples of clusters • Comparative Study of Societies Race, Ethnicity, and Nationalism • Science and Society • Sex and Gender • Education and Society • Local, Regional, and State Politics • U.S. Society & Politics • Public Policy • Social Change

  14. Remember, the “cluster” is made up of three “selective courses.” A sampling of course choices: Law and Social Groups Social Movements Comparative Race and Ethnic Relations Science and Social Policy Educational Policy Sexual Politics Jews and Anti-Semitism American Politics & Equality The Civil Rights Movement and its Legacies Asian American History Metropolitan Society Global Cities & Urbanism Global Issues in Citizenship African American Politics Women and Power in Comparative Perspective Global Public Health Gender and Violent Conflict Public Policy Analysis Israeli Politics, Cultures, and Society Contemporary Developments in American Politics Comparative Black Political Thought Culture, Politics, and Post-Colonialism

  15. All JMC majors are compatible with a wide variety of double majors & minors • Among SRP students’ double majors: CCP, PTCD, IR, Sociology, Psychology, Finance, Economics, Communications, Marketing, Women’s Studies (& more) • Among SRP students’ minors (for some minors, 1-2 SRP courses count toward the minor) • Housed in MC: Political Economy, Muslim Studies, Science Policy (STEPPS), Western European Studies • In other MSU programs: Asian Pacific American Studies, African American and African Studies, Jewish Studies, Peace and Justice Studies, Film Studies • Talk to your advisor, who may know more about these options.
