New England MRC Information • 94 Active MRC Units: 22 CT, 46 MA, 3 ME, 15 NH, 6 VT, 1 RI • Approximately 23,000 volunteers in New England • Nationally 987 units – 208,140 volunteers • Mission: Engaging volunteers to strengthen public health, emergency response, and community resiliency
New England MRC Emergency Response • 2011 October Snowstorm, “Frankenstorm” – MA, CT, NH • Sheltering • Warming and Recharge Stations • 2012 Superstorm Sandy – Coastal CT, MA and RI • Sheltering • Power Recharge Stations • 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings • FY 2013: Over 14,000 Activities Reported Nationally – Massachusetts was first in the nation and had 4 units in the top 20 as activity reporters!
New England MRC Response Lessons Learned • ARC Memorandums of Understanding • Acknowledge capabilities of each partnering organization • Management, scheduling and accountability of volunteers • Communication limitations • Local planning integration • Creating partners – known and newly discovered • Identification of population, languages, culture • Necessary trainings, volunteer follow up (debriefs)
