Contribution to theNRMM PEMS Programme Considerations By Euromot / CECE / CEMA Brussels 21 April 2008 2nd Meeting NRMM PEMS Expert Group www.euromot.org
NRMM Industry’s View on the Program Scope • The program aims for investigating in-use testing provisions for NRMM Stage IV • For a significant amount of engines used in certain type of machinery compliance will continue to be demonstrated by CoP • Two-step approach suggested: focus on in-service conformity prior to in-use compliance provisions • Consideration of health & safety aspects, design and operational constraints will require to set up selection and de-selection criteria for certain types of equipment www.euromot.org
NRMM Industry’s View on NRMM PEMS (Cont’d) • Availability of equipment and technical feasibility • The amount of modifications required for installing PEMS units on user-owned equipment will be restricted • NRMM industry will provide Stage IIIA technology • Measurements to focus first on gaseous compounds • Low priority on gensets: in-use profiles close to test bed operation, no aftertreatment requirements • Required to consider ongoing US activities and review with US EPA www.euromot.org
Proposed Applications • Selection criteria: - Address construction and agricultural - Focus on high sales volume applications - Set up lower cap at 56 kW due to NRMM Stage IV scope • Additionally, check feasibility on skid-steer loaders and mini excavators <56 kW • Amount of modifications required for mounting and running test equipment • Health & safety aspects, design and operational constraints www.euromot.org
Program Logistics • Contributions confirmed • Equipment: Volvo CE, JCB, CNH, Caterpillar, John Deere, Scania, Fendt, (Liebherr) • Engine manufacturers' support to OEM: Deutz, Cummins, Fiat Powertrain • List non-exclusive, more to join subject to further details of the work program • Individual contributions tbd, ensure sample sizes >1 • Preferred route • Manufacturers will provide equipment and staff for tests to be conducted at their premises • JRC will provide PEMS units and staff to operate • A Euromot/CECE/CEMA task force will steer the program from engine and equipment manufacturers' side www.euromot.org
Operating Cycles • Objective: • Generate sample data based on application specific, regular activity • NRMM industry is not proposing to develop test cycles for in-use testing • Typical load profiles are publicly available or can be derived in a straightforward manner • Wheel loaders, excavators, harvesters: move to site + perform standard operations • Tractors: road operation, high load (ploughing), low load (seeding) • Backhoe loaders: road operation, excavating with backhoe, loading with front bucket • Industry will support setting up appropriate cycle data www.euromot.org
