  1. HAR HATH KO KAAM

  2. Background: • Himachal Prisons have approximately 2500 prisoners out of which 750 are convicts. • 46% are sole bread winners. • “Har Hath KoKaam” project was started in the year 2016 to provide livelihood opportunity to the prisoners.

  3. Objectives: • Reformation and rehabilitation of inmates. • Address loneliness leading to stress and also mischief. • Providing job opportunities to the prisoners inside and outside the prisons. • Changing the attitude of society towards prisoners by bringing them directly in contact with the reformed ones. • Increasing productivity of jail factories.

  4. Achievements: The result of the project “Har Hath KoKaam” is quite creditable as will be clear from the following table:- This could be achieved by proper analysis of the market, demand, product diversification and better productivity practices.

  5. Achievements Conscious shift from low value products to high value modern bakery items were introduced after training under the chefs of Radisson Blu, a five star hotel in Shimla.

  6. Achievements Instead of doing odd tailoring jobs, weaving insipid fabrics and meeting only the in-house requirements, a modern clothing assembly line has been set up. High value shawls, stoles and mufflers and tweed are now being woven. Our blankets are on GeM. Handloom tagging

  7. Achievements A local fashion designer, Sh. Bhupen Paul has been roped in to design clothes for the local market. Inmates are now stitching some of the clothes sold by Khadi Bhandars in Himachal Pradesh. Started our own clothing line –KaaraLine. Trademark registration process on.

  8. Achievements To provide greater marketing opportunities for the jails products, four flagship stores under the brand name of Pehal have been opened at Model Central Jail, Nahan, District Jails at Dharamshala & Shimla (Kaithu) and District Court Complex, Shimla. One is being opened in Secretariat next week.

  9. Achievements An online shopping portal www.kaarabazaar.in has also been launched which is quite popular among our patrons.

  10. Achievements Pioneering work has been done in providing job opportunities outside the confines of prisons in various private establishments and factories. At present 160 prisoners step out of the jails to work in these units and return in the evening after their day’s work.

  11. Achievements In a revolutionary rehabilitation endeavor, through an agreement with the Municipal Corporation of Shimla, life convicts are managing and operating Shimla Book Café at the historic Ridge. The Shimla Book Café has been lauded in the print and electronic media in India and abroad.

  12. Achievements For the requirement of women inmates and to improve personal hygiene among rural girls, a Sanitary Napkin making machine has been installed in Model Central Jail, Nahan.

  13. Recognition: • TinkaTinka award by the noted NGO by the same name working in the field of prisons reforms. • Dr. Kalam Innovation in Governance Award (KIGA) 2018 for Har Hath KoKaam initiative. • Himachal Pradesh, State Innovation Award-2018 for Har Hath KoKaam initiative. • A documentary film “Behind the Bars” which documents the lives of inmates rehabilitation and welfare programmes initiated in Himachal Prisons has won first prize in NHRC short film competition.
