The Cost of Current Social Security Benefits Current (2007) payroll tax is 7.65% of first $97,500 in earnings plus 1.45% of any additional earnings. The employer and the employee both pay this amount.
Example You earn $30,000 this year. You pay $2295 in Social Security taxes (0.0765 x 30,000) and your employer pays the same amount. The total Social Security tax is $4590 (15.3% of your salary). Of this 15.3%, 12.4% is for OASDI and 2.9% is for HI (Medicare).
Example 2 You earn $197,500 this year. Your Social Security taxes are $8908.75 (.0765 x 97,500 + .0145 x 100,000) and your employer pays the same amount. The total Social Security tax is $17,817.50.

Amount of Benefits(http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/piaformula.html) The Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) is a function of covered earnings. First, actual earnings are adjusted for inflation. Then average earnings during a selected period of time is calculated (Average Indexed Monthly Earnings, or AIME). For 2007, the PIA is based on the AIME: 90% of the first $680 32% of the AIME from $680-$4,100 15% of the AIME over $4,100.

What Will Happen to Social Security Three choices by the time you retire: Raise payroll taxes by 50-100% Lower benefits by 1/3 to 1/2 Reduce the number of beneficiaries Increase the Normal Retirement Age to around 75 Which would you choose?
One Proposal to Save Social Security Reduce the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLAs) by 1% If this is done now, the Social Security system will remain solvent indefinitely Why don’t we do this?
