Making a branching database using Powerpoint
You need to use your key that you made in the last session. • Open a new blank publication in PowerPoint • Make a title page using Word Art. 'My Living things' key
Make a master slide with a question box for the first sorting question on your key. Like this…
On your master slide, make a nice big text box which says ‘No’ • Copy and paste it. • Change the text to ‘Yes’ No Yes No
Copy and paste this master slide so that you have enough for every sorting question on your key. • (7 slides in total) • Change the question text to match each question, like this…
Does it have 4 legs? No Yes
Does it have 8 legs? No Yes
Does it have big teeth? No Yes
Does it have 2 legs? No Yes
Does it have feathers? No Yes
Does it eat chickens? No Yes
Make a page for each answer like this: Crocodile You will have eight answer boxes.
Carefully following your key, hyperlink each ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ to the correct question or answer slide. • If you have forgotten how to hyperlink, follow these instructions. Right click on the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ button Click on ‘hyperlink’ On the left hand side, under ‘link to’, click on ‘Place in this document’ CAREFULLY select the correct slide. Use your key as a map!
Next, make a ‘back’ action button, copy and paste on each page. • Finally, make a ‘home’ action button and place on each answer page. Hint- you’ll find the Action Buttons on the ‘Draw’ tool bar under ‘AutoShapes;!
Congratulations- you have made a PowerPoint key or branching database!!
