  2. Brief Biography • Born: January 11, 1842 • Died: August 26, 1910 • Started teaching at Harvard in 1875 • He was often called the father of psychology.

  3. School of Thought Functionalism • The doctrine that emphasizes the adaptiveness of the mental or behavioral processes

  4. Basic Theories • Everything that we experience creates our behavior and personality • Behavior is learned (Nurture)

  5. Experiments/Concentrations • Sensorial Attention: is when affection is directed to objects of sense – stimuli that are physically present. • Intellectual Attention: is attention directed to ideal or represented objects – stimuli that are not physically present. • James believes that attention has five major affects: • Makes us perceive, conceive, distinguish, remember, and shorten reaction times.
