What is a Covering Letter? • A letter that accompanies your resume. • You use it to respond to a job ad, follow up on a lead, or want to indicate interest in a company.
What is the Purpose of a Cover Letter? • To introduce yourself and your resume and to get a job interview.
Things to do: • Address a specific person. Call the company to find out the hiring manager’s name and correct address (if not outlined in the job ad) • If you are unable to find a specific person address the letter “To Whom it May Concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam.”
Make sure your letter is: • Neatly typed • Free of errors • Follows standard format (see sample cover letter in module 3) • Include your name, full address and contact information • Included the date, name of person hiring and the company’s address
Paragraph 1- What to include • Clearly explain your purpose for writing the letter – to apply for a job. • State the job you are applying for and how you learned about it.
Paragraph two – what to include: • Explain why you are the best applicant for the job. • Highlight your major qualifications and experiences that relate to the position. • Be specific and related to the job ad.
Paragraph three – what to include: • Express your enthusiasm for the job • Thank the person for their time and consideration. • Request a personal interview.
