Suffocation • National Safety Council recognizes two types of suffocation: • Suffocation - ingested object • Suffocation - mechanical • Abdominal thrusts aka Heimlich maneuver
Suffocation by ingestion • In children, choking is usually caused by food, toys and other small objects that get easily lodged in a child’s small airway. • Anything that fits can be a danger: raw carrots and celery, peas, nuts, sunflower seeds, cherries with pits, watermelon with seed, popcorn and hard candy are a few examples.
Suffocation • Mechanical suffocation includes smothering by bed clothes, thin plastic materials, cave-ins or confinement in closed spaces, cords, etc. • Third leading cause of death in children up to four years of age • The most common way for children to suffocate is in the bed or crib and by accidental hanging.
