  2. Before we start, let’s take a moment of silence for Michael Gres. Students from the 2010 class at the Feik School of Pharmacy are developing plans for a scholarship in his memory.

  3. Update on Vision 2012

  4. Vision 2012 Enrollment Goals: (Revised) • 3,500 FT UGs • 3,000 Online • 2,500 ADCaP • * Arizona (blended into VU & ADCaP) • 1,800 Graduate & Professional • 1,500 China & Mexico • = 12,300 • = 2nd largest private university in Texas

  6. Enrollment UIW’s enrollment is 7,166. This is the first time in history it’s surpassed 7,000. UIW’s enrollment has nearly doubled from the year 2000.

  8. Enrollment UIW’s enrollment is more than twice the combined enrollments of the next two largest private universities in San Antonio.

  10. Enrollment Shaping UIW had its second-largest ever class of first-time freshmen (724). A key difference from the past: The average SAT score is 991. This surpasses last year’s average of 960, and also exceeded this year’s goal of 969.

  13. Financial Assistance More than $2.5 million in aid has been added to the budget since the summer to meet the needs of new and returning students. In all, more than $44 million in TEG and institutional financial aid has been awarded this year. Even with the increase, we’ve kept a substantial operating reserve of and the budget is in balance (at $146 million, the largest budget in UIW history).

  14. Innovation At the UG level, we’ll investigate a Chinese Studies Program that goes beyond language instruction. At the HS level, we’ll look at language instruction. (China)

  16. iPhone/iTouch The iPhone pilot test was launched Sept. 30. The unveiling of the first UIW-branded application - a UIW directory – is set for mid-October. The course catalogue and registration application will be unveiled by Advising Day. Additional applications for student and administrative use will follow. We’re also planning to utilize our existing relationship with Blackboard to subscribe to their new Mobile Edu applications, which are diverse and will also branded for UIW. The Help Desk will support the iPhones

  17. iPhone/iTouch We’re also developing a plan to support student purchases of iPhones through financial aid. Under this plan, students would be responsible for paying monthly subscription fees. Unlike the laptop program, students won’t be required to have an iPhone or data phone. However, it may be required in certain academic programs where applications are available that are useful or essential for learning. We’ll work closely with AT&T to promote student iPhone use & subscriptions in the future.

  18. Have submitted nearly $13 million in external funding applications.Realization of any of the grants will allow us to integrate them into the ongoing planning process. Grant Initiatives

Academic Coordinating Council A University-wide body that will serve as a communications vehicle between and among the schools regarding: 1) Academic issues; and 2) The requirements of various accrediting bodies. And as needed, 3) To ensure compatibility with the Mission of the University of the Incarnate Word; and 4) To resolve conflicts regarding the academic requirements of various programs. However, the ACC will not be a governance body.

  22. For example, our growth has made possible innovative programs such as pharmacy and optometry. Both have added to our academic reputation and increased our visibility.

  23. FYI:100 percent of the 3rd-year pharmacy students passed an in-house test that allowed them to begin their 4th-year clinical experience this fall.The test is a strong indicator of how students will fare in their licensing exam next year.

  24. Nearly half of the students in the 2013 pharmacy class are from first generation backgrounds. This is in keeping with UIW’s historical mission of providing educational opportunities to populations underserved by higher education.

  25. FYI: The overall GPA of the inaugural optometry class is 3.31. The students are part of the national top 1.5% of all college graduates.The class is 71% minority. It’s also 12% Hispanic, which is four times the national average.

  26. FYI: The pass rate for teacher certification was 98%. The pass rate for the nursing licensing exam in the last quarter was 93.33%. Our annual average is 89.13% while the state average is 86.17%.

  27. Football is allowing us to expand our music program.

  28. Football also provides new opportunities that fit with our Mission. For instance, a recent column in Conexiónapplauded UIW for fielding a team that’s nearly one-third Hispanic, a rarity among Texas collegiate football programs that have typically featured few Hispanic players.

  29. Growth allows greater numbers of people to access a UIW education.

  31. However, we are willing to sacrifice growth to improve quality.

  32. Challenges

Financial Strength The endowment had decreased from $64.8 million to $54.4 million due to the country’s financial situation. • It’s now back up to $66.1 million. • FYI: The Endowment was $3 million in 1987 and $12 million in 1997. • Unlike many other colleges, UIW did not experience layoffs or hiring freezes and was the only college is the country to offer employee bonuses.

  34. SACS/Other Accreditation Visits Be prepared to respond effectively (and quickly) to any accreditation-related issues, whether from SACS or other agencies.

  35. Affordability/Perception UIW has usually featured the lowest tuition rate among the six largest private universities in Texas, while its students have represented the socio-economic spectrum. Yet the perception persists that UIW is elitist and that it’s too expensive.

  37. Local Economy(the good) San Antonio’s economy is among the strongest in Texas and the USA. Its unemployment rate in September was 7.1%, a slight increase from August. For Texas it’s 8.2%. For the USA it’s 9.8%. FYI: SA’s unemployment rate for the same time last year was 5.1%.

Local Economy(the good) SA ranked #1 among the 100 largest metro areas in overall performance in 4 economic indicators: Employment; low unemployment rate; housing price index; and productive output (Brookings Institution). Forbes.com selected SA as the city that’s fifth-most likely to recover sooner rather than later from the recession.

  39. Local Economy(the troublesome) San Antonio currently has approximately 20,000 more unemployed people than at the same time last year. Home foreclosures are up 51% from the same time last year.

  40. Local Economy(the troublesome) • San Antonio has a low educational attainment, based on the number of working-age people with at least a bachelor’s degree (about 20%). • Also, 1 in 4 do not have a high school diploma. • These are seen as some of the biggest obstacles to continued growth.

  41. Local Economy(the troublesome) • According to the Federal Reserve, San Antonio needs to do a better job of: • Showing high-skill businesses that graduates for those jobs are here. • 2) Attracting more employers such as Medtronic Diabetes to keep those graduates from leaving San Antonio.

UIW named a 2009 “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education.The national survey recognizes institutions that have created exceptional work places.UIW reached the Top 10 in 2 categories for medium-size schools (3,000 to 9,999):1) Teaching Environment2) Policy, Resources and Efficiency

The Carver Academy A new partnership with The Carver Academy provides their graduates with annual scholarships of $2,500 to attend one of the Brainpower Connection schools, beginning in the 7th grade through the fourth year of college ($25,000 over 10 years). St. Anthony Catholic High School St. Anthony Catholic School St. Peter Prince of the Apostles School Incarnate Word High School University of the Incarnate Word • ““I remember coming here in the beginning and practicing at Incarnate Word,” said David Robinson, founder of The Carver Academy. “We had our practice facility there and I’ve just watched them grow tremendously. They’ve done a phenomenal job raising money. They’ve done a phenomenal job in getting kids an opportunity to go to college.”

  45. Football • UIW played its first game August 29 against Monterrey Tech at Benson Stadium. UIW won 42 to 39. Over 6,200 people attended.

  48. Lou’s 25th Anniversary Preparations will begin in the spring to celebrate the 25th anniversary in March 2011 of Lou’s inauguration as President. Factoid 1: A study by The Council of Independent Colleges found the average age of first-time university presidents at all private universities is 59.Lou was just 34at his inauguration in 1986, and is still under the average age today (OK, just barely!). Factoid 2: According to the study, Lou is currently the youngest president of a doctoral-level private institution.

  50. Identity • With the many rapid changes taking place at UIW, it’s vital that we never lose sight of the Mission or our Catholic identity. • While at the same time, always welcome people of different faiths, and simply ask them that they continue growing in their own faith.
