Overview • Goal • Background • MCIT: ICT & Gender • Road Map
Goal • Describe a Road Map that help increasing women awareness of ICT and enhance their participation in planning monitoring, and implementing national and international plans.
Background • A Forum on ICT and Gender: Optimizing Opportunities Held on 23 August 2003, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. • Participants included: Governmental and Non-governmental organizations; United Nations, international organizations, private sector, research and educational institutions, academia, media and other stakeholders
ICT & Women • Importance of ICT as a tool to promote women's empowerment, rights and dignity and full participation in the information society • ICT offers immense possibilities for enhancing women's participation in socio-economic and political development that will reduce poverty and improve quality of life • Potential of ICT to overcome women's isolation gives all women a voice and improve governance with a view to achieving gender equality
Some Recommendations of the Forum • Ensure the inclusion of a gender perspective and coordination of the gender activities in all domains of national ICT policies and legislation including education and that all stakeholders including women's organizations participate in the drafting and monitoring of such policies and legislation.
Some Recommendations of the Forum (cont.) • Support programs that give instructors especially females the skills and use ICT and Open/Distance Leaning (ODL) in education delivery. • Support ICT capacity building in women's organizations to enhance their capability to transfer knowledge to their target groups. • Introduce ICT into the school curriculum at the earliest possible opportunity, ensuring equal access to all.
Some Recommendations of the Forum • Raise awareness of legislators and policy-makers of the benefits/opportunities of ICT for educational use. • Mobilize and allocate funds to ensure gender sensitive ICT policies and strategies in education and to strengthen infrastructure to support women's use of ICT and ODL for educational use.

ICT for Illiteracy Eradication • The ICT for Illiteracy Eradication Project is developing and will produce an educational content for illiterate youth with emphasis on women using Information and Communication Technology
ICT for Illiteracy Eradication • Objectives • Develop an appropriate generic content in cooperation with GALAE & UNDP; • Produce the developed content using multimedia technology & avail it through a set of CDs or/and the Web; • Conduct a pilot course using the produced CDs and assess its impact, in cooperation with NCW
