Hornwort 404 Biology I aguilar.chua.cortez.
Bryophytes <- Moss Liverwort -> Also known as Non-Vascular plants Terrestrial with some aquatic forms Very small Photosynthetic Lack specialized cells for the transport of materials
Structure of Hornwort Spaces between cells filled with mucilage – Distinguishing characteristic. Single, large chloroplast – Photosynthesis (chl a, b, carotenoids, xanthophylls). Rhizoids – Hairlike structure; for anchorage. Stomata – Exchange gases between plant and air.
Habitat Damp and humid places. Rocky environment. Forests, fields, ponds, streams and riverbanks. Tree trunks.
Reproduction • Asexual or vegetative. • Sexual. • Male – Antheridium; Female – Archegonium • Both are embedded in the thallus. • Antherida breaks down. • Sperm are chemically attracted to eggs. • Zygotes are scattered over the plant. • Grow into the next generation of sporophytes. • As they mature, they split into two halves lengthwise and release spores. • Hornwort germinates directly from the spores. • Produce a flat thalloid plant with greasy blue-green color, which is the next generation of gametophyte.
Ecology Aquarium plants (filter; absorbs chemicals). Nitrogen fixation. Astringent.
Examples of species <- Anthocerosformosae Ceratophyllum demersum -> <- Phaeoceroscarolinianus Megacerosflagellaris->
