References Do I really need references? Will they really be checked? How many should I have? Who should I select? What should they say?
References #1. Create a list of at least four references that an employer can check. • Select people who can and will say positive things about you and who have known you well for at least 2-3 years. • Get permission of references before you use them. • Let them know to expect a call • Format your Reference List as a visually appealing Word or PowerPoint document to present in your career portfolio.
Career Goals #2. Develop 3-5 conceivable, believable, desirable, achievable, measurable goals for 2-10 years from now. See slides 26-28 for more information.
Career Goals What do you see yourself doing • Two years from now, • Goal 1 • Goal 2 • Goal 3 • Five years from now, • Goal 1 • Goal 2 • Goal 3 • Ten years from now? • Goal 1 • Goal 2 • Goal 3 • What do you want to have accomplished?
Career Goals Start with your ultimate career goal (long-term), and then work backwards to the present, listing educational or work positions (short-term goals), which can help you to attain your long-term goal. List 3 to 5 goals (at least 2 short-term, and 1 long-term). Format your Career Goals Sheet as a visually appealing word processing or PowerPoint document to present in your career portfolio and to discuss in your job interviews.
Career Goals • Remember to write these in terms that will appeal to a prospective employer. • Telling a chef you want to open your own restaurant in five years probably won’t help you get the job. • You can think very long term if it helps. • How do you want to be remembered when you have passed away? • What is your purpose for being on the planet? • Also, people live a long time now. You can have three full careers in a lifetime.
Educational Summary #3. Create a one-page overview of your chosen academic program including: • Your academic goal or achievement (if finished); • Name of institution; • Program description; • Curriculum (include grades that are B or higher); other relevant courses. • Format your Educational Summary as a visually appealing word processing or PowerPoint document to present in your career portfolio and to discuss in your job interviews.
Educational Summary • If you have other training put that in there as well. • Seminars or conferences • Continuing education • Non degree training courses • Military training • On the job training
