  1. How to calculate the Shannon-Weaver diversity index Borrowed from: University of Hawaii Dep’t of Biology www.biology.hawaii.edu/301L/Spring/ppt/Shannon-Weaverpp.ppt

  2. H’ = The Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index pi= the relative abundance of each group of organisms But remember that the S-W index is usually expressed as eH’ OR H'= - ∑(Ni/N) × ln (Ni/N)

  3. Enter the relative abundances in the next Enter your critters in one column Enter their abundances (=counts from your sample) in the next Like so…

  4. Remember: relative abundance is simply the abundance divided by the total. It should always total to 1. Now we need natural logs (ln)…

  5. LN is the formula for natural log Next multiply LN(Pi) by Pi…

  6. Now add it up…

  7. Now multiply by -1…

  8. Now raise e to H’…

  9. EXP is the formula for raising e to a power Ta Da!

  10. …and change your abundances in these cells. …simply leave all the formulas in place in these cells… In order to calculate SW for your other samples…
