Students designing in Early Stage 1 Science and Technology The Foundation Statements and the Early Stage 1 outcome for designing and making place an emphasis on students: • generating their own ideas and designs • exploring ideas, manipulating materials and trialling designs through play • safely using some equipment and computer-based technology. At Early Stage 1, students talk about their own ideas and their own likes and dislikes. They tell how their ideas for products and places might help people. Students should be encouraged to use their imagination when drawing and modelling design ideas. Following are two samples of classroom practice.
Early Stage 1 Task A; Design and make a helicopter Task: Designing and producing helicopters talking needs generating design ideas Students talked about helicopters and how they are used to rescue people. generating design ideas
Early Stage 1 Task A: Design and make a helicopter (cont.) producing solutions producing solutions evaluating solutions We talked about our helicopters and how we could improve our designs. Some students wanted to make more realistic models with curves and glass.
Early Stage 1 Task B: Design and make a boat that sails design ideas design ideas researching uses
Early Stage 1 Task B: Design and make a boat that sails (cont.) producing solutions design solution We set up a pool and sailed our boats to see which ones worked well. design solution evaluating solutions
