Developing The Habit Of Winning In Young Children Kids whine. But you can do something to correct that behavior in small children. Instead of whining, help them develop a habit of winning. And by winning, that means kids who are well-adjusted to survive and triumph over many things in life. Here are some ways you can encourage that habit. Explain the Problem Don’t get angry at your kids. The older they get, the more important it is for you to use a clear or calm tone to describe the situation, what they did, and what they should do. Tell them what’s wrong without a sense of persecution. Explain the Solution Tell the kids what’s going to happen. Ignore them when they whine. That will train them not to whine because they’ll know that it won’t get them the response they want. Answer them only when they talk in a sensible and calm manner. Give Examples If the children have no idea what you mean, give them examples. That will help them visualize things. Showing them the correct action or alternative will make it clearer to them the kind of behavior that’s acceptable, that they should aspire to in the future. Instead of just telling them to ‘stop’ what they’re doing, show them a better way. That will improve their understanding of what happened. Do It
If you respond to the whining, apologize to your kids. That’s one way to show them that you also hold yourself accountable, too. If you responded to the whining, then stop. Correct yourself and show them that you do. It’s important that they see you being consistent because that’s the behavior that they’ll pick up, too. Keep at It Show your kids that you stick to what you promised. Make sure your children understand that you don’t move your boundaries. You’ll need to do this for many, many years, sometimes even after your kids are in college or beyond. Seeing you being firm on issues will help your kids develop a better understanding of why they should replace whining with habits that will make them into a winner instead.
