Symptoms • Binge eating • Purging • vomiting, fasting, exercising too much, or misusing laxatives, diuretics, ipecac, ipecac syrup, or enemas. • Feeling a loss of control over how much you eat • Feeling ashamed of overeating and very fearful of gaining weight • Basing your self-esteem and value upon your body shape and weight • Most people with bulimia are in their normal weight range

Socio-Cultural • Desire to be thin is powerfully influenced by the media • Weight a factor of popularity • one must be skinny to look attractive. Food in the US is so widely available that we spend most of our time figuring out what, when, and where to eat. This causes many people to overeat, or binge.
Biological • Disturbances in neurotransmitter serotonin • helps regulate feeding, mood, and neuro-endocrine activity • Abnormalities continue after endingbingeing and purging activities • Imbalances contribute to long-term mood disturbances, obsession and perfectionism
Cognitive • Distorted beliefs about food, eating, body shape and size • Obsessions over weight and food • Poor concentration, memory, and difficulty making decisions
Long Term Effects • Misuse of laxative medicines can lead to serious health problems and even death. • Other conditions may occur with bulimia • depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders • Suicidal thoughts
Immediate Effects of Bulimia • Damage to teeth from continuous vomiting • Almost clear in color due to damage to tooth enamel • Rounded • Very sensitive to temperature • If it is extreme enough, back teeth will reduce in size or fall out all together
Treatment • Psychological counseling • interpersonal therapy • cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) • nutritional counselingto change certain behavior and thinking patterns. • Medicines • Antidepressants • reduce binge-purge cycles and relieve symptoms of depression that often occur along with eating disorders • fluoxetine (Prozac) • Relapse is common
