The Physical Chemistry in Practice DVD – A Multimedia InstructionalSupplement for Physical Chemistry Gabriela C. WeaverPurdue University
Goals of the Physical Chemistry in Practice DVD • Complement the very mathematical and abstract nature of classroom PChem instruction with real research applications • Put PChem in relevant contexts • Provide authentic data for student analysis • Include visualizations of abstract or microscopic concepts.
The Physical Chemistry in Practice DVD • 10 programs about current research utilizing physical chemistry concepts • The research projects have some application that is tangible to students • The modules include instruction on modern instrumentation, data analysis, and applications of the research
The Web-enhanced DVD Format • DVD and HTML can be displayed in the same viewing environment.
The DVD plays in the window and can be controlled through this interface. Other content can also be displayed in this window, depending on choices made by the user using the menu at the left.
The Web-enhanced DVD Format • HTML page can initiate commands to the DVD Video disc • DVD video can initiate commands within an HTML page • Broadcast-quality video and audio • **FULLSCREEN*** DVD video with no loss of resolution (simple toggle switch control) • Full HTML functionality (links, Flash, Java, etc.) • Access to the “outside world” • “Virtual Bandwidth” from “on-board” DVD video
Module Layout • Background and Theory • Video Movies • Animations • Interactive Problems • Script (for videos) • List of References
Background Theory: HTML-based This is an example from the old interface, but the content in the new interface is the same.
Video Movies • All the DVD benefits: • Broadcast-quality digital video • MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 encoding, and VBR option (variable bit rate encoding for more complex scenes) • Dolby Digital or PCM Audio (Pulse code modulation, same as CD-Audio) • Multiple video or audio tracks: multi-language, multi-angle • Multiple subgraphic tracks: graphic overlays, subtitles, captions, simple animations, turn on/off • Ubiquitous Playback • Set top players, DVD computer drives, portable players
Video Movies • Show science research in action, being done and explained by the scientists • Interviews, laboratory procedures, instruments
The PCIP DVD for teaching • 10 programs will cover full content of traditional PChem curriculum • Supplement lecture or lab • in-class use by instructor • private viewing by students on computer or TV with DVD player • Versatility of use
The Current State • 3 programs completed • AFM/Semiconductor Growth (Stephen Leone, CU-Boulder/Berkeley) • SERS/Brain Amino Acids (Gerard Coté, TAMU) • Solid-phase (polymer) kinetics and computer modeling (Frances Houle, IBM-Almaden Research labs) • 2 additional programs taped (in editing phase) • NMR/MRI (Jack Roberts, Caltech and Bill Bradley, UCSD Medical Center) • Hydrogen Fuel Cells (Sossina Haile, Caltech) • Taping schedule for January ‘04 • Bose-Einstein Condensates (Eric Cornell, CU-Boulder) • Additional programs on Schedule for ’04/’05 • Electronic structure of Vitamin B-12 Corrinoids (UW-Madison) • Muscle entropy/molecular mechanics (Berkeley) • Atmospheric aerosols (TBD) • Nano-bio sensors (Purdue)
