  3. TAMU Rec Sports Rating TAMU Rec Sports is 5 star rated because it offers a variety of experience in different areas. I was able to work as the personal training supervisor, a fitness assistant, a personal trainer, a fitness instructor, a bootcamp coach and, a head weight and fitness room attendant. Being in these diverse positions I was able to gain a better understanding of the daily operations of Rec Sports. Being on the administrative side and the student worker side has been beneficial for both myself and the organization.

  4. Student Recreation Center Outside view of the Rec Center.

  5. Personal Training Intern Sitting at my desk. I would go through the daily paperwork, logging sessions, matching clients with trainers and completing PPR.

  6. Personal Trainer On a daily basis I averaged working with two clients a day. Our sessions were an hour long and varied depending on the clients needs.

  7. Fitness Instructor I teach cardio, strength and flexibility classes. This particular class was one that I presented at TexFit called “Slanted Strength.”

  8. Head Weight & Fitness Room Attendant Working a shift in Texas A&M Weight and Fitness room. The shifts are typically three hours and duties include, daily cleaning, counting male and female patrons every hour, providing excellent customer service, answering fitness related questions and giving spots during lifts.

  9. Wisdom If you’re truly interested in working in Colligate Recreational Sports after graduation this is the best option for you. I was given as much responsibility as a full time staff member and I was depended upon daily. You must be mature enough to handle the emotional and physical struggles that come with working 14 hours a day and able to balance your time and attention between both departments. You also must be willing to deal this different types of personalities because, you will constantly be interacting with others. It was also smart to use your connections wisely while still employed as an intern. The full time staff at TAMU Rec Sports are highly regarded in their chosen fields and have a great deal of knowledge and connections.

  10. Internship Objectives 1. To assist DeAunWoosley with the logistics of TexFit, the largest collegiate level fitness conference in Texas. The goal of the conference is to have 250 group fitness instructors and personal trainers. 2. To develop and use an efficient and simple method of logging payroll for 40+ instructors using the Microsoft Office program, Excel. 3. To act as the Supervisor for the Personal Training Program by accepting new clients, assigning them to a suitable trainer, and keep records of their sessions. 4. To assist the weight and fitness room supervisors by helping with the daily paperwork and maintenance of the weight and fitness facility. Through this process I will continue to develop my communication and technical skills. 5. To become a more professionally advanced fitness instructor, personal trainer, bootcamp coach and yoga instructor by working for knowledgeable and experienced directors.

  11. Daily Activities The daily activities will change everyday. There is no “typical day at the office.” I chose to coach, train and teach in the morning so that the majority of my afternoon could be devoted to administrative work. I would arrive a the Rec at 5:30am, coach a bootcamp class, meet with back to back clients and teach a aeorbics, strength or flexibility class. After I was done with this portion of my day I would usually eat lunch while doing the daily paperwork for the personal training program. Some of this includes logging the previous days sessions, updating payroll, answering voicemails and emails and checking to make sure all paperwork was well stocked at the member services desk and the personal training assessment room. After completing my daily paperwork I would begin work on any ongoing projects that I may have. Examples of projects I completed are; composing and distributing a group exercise equipment survey, writing and designing flyers to promote the endurance programs, filming for “Rec Sports: Ask a Personal Trainer,” or even interviewing potential certified personal trainers.

  12. Project Description TexFit is a large fitness conference that all colleges in Texas are invited to. This year TAMU Rec Sports had the honor of hosting the event. Because I previously worked for DeAun as a fitness assistant prior to my internship, I was aware of the event and was able to start work right away. My responsibilities included; working with Member Services to register over 250 participants, help with the coordination and selection of 24 student presenters, assistance in creating the TexFit manual that was passed out to all the participants, organize and pass out different lunches and t-shirts and, I also presented a class called “Slanted Strength.” This has been an enormous undertaking but I have already learned so much about the importance of organization, time management, communication, and patience.
