  1. ECHO Katie Calloway

  2. ECHO – Educational Concern for Hunger Organization • Main headquarters located in North Fort Meyers, Florida (Global Farm, Research Center, Reference Library, Seed Bank, Tropical Fruit Nursery, Global Bookstore and Staff Offices) • ECHO also has impact centers in Asia and East Africa. Which helps them to more effectively network with partners overseas.

  3. ECHO’s core beliefs • “We are Christian in our behavior, beliefs, motivations, and attitudes” • “We are stewards of the resources God gives us” • “We are servants in both our management style and our focus on others” • “We are partners as we join with other organizations and agencies to accomplish our goals” • “We value people as we work and interact with each other and those we serve, giving priority to people over institutional structure”

  4. ECHo’s Mission • “ECHO is a global Christian organization that equips people with agricultural resources and skills to reduce hunger and improve the lives of the poor”

  5. - ECHO started in the 70’s after the experience of Indiana businessman Richard Dugger in Haiti • - Until 1981 ECHO was solely doing work with various projects in Haiti • After 1981, the work in Haiti closed and ECHO became more of a pipeline for sharing information, ideas, techniques, methods, plants, books, materials, and solutions

  6. Why echo does what it does • Approximately 925 million people across the world are hungry • More than 9 million children under age 5 die every year, and malnutrition accounts for more than one-third of these deaths. Most of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

  7. Some more statistics • About 5.6 million deaths of children worldwide are related to under-nutrition. This accounts for 53% of the total deaths of children under 5 • More than 140 million (25%) of all children in developing countries are underweight and at risk from the long-term effects of malnourishment • More than 6 million children die from malnutrition each year • Worldwide, 161 million preschool children suffer from chronic malnutrition • Already 923 million people worldwide are undernourished, and there are more than 9 million deaths related to hunger each year

  8. Does the world even produce enough food to feed everyone? • According to ECHO, the world produces enough food to feed every person on the planet. World agriculture produces 17% more calories per person today than it did 30 years ago. This is enough to provide everyone in the world with at least 2,720 kilocalories per person per day. The main problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow, or income to purchase, enough food.

  9. Echo’s response to this inequality • “To empower small-holder farmers to increase their harvests, while also increasing the nutritional diversity of their crops. By equipping farmers to provide for their own families, we are creating sustainable solutions to hunger”

  10. Video on family farming • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9hryUpy6_E#t=17

  11. Educational opportunities • ECHO offers three basic educational opportunities: • Courses and Workshops • Study Program • Internship program

  12. ECHO community is one of the biggest things that they offer learners. It is basically a global agriculture network. It is a source of information on the best solutions to the problems of hunger and unsustainability around the world.

  13. Examples of echo learners • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg_wFuID9Vo • http://echonet.org/echo-videos/2013/4/18/echo-fights-hunger-learn-how-here

  14. How echo relates to our class • It is important to study because it is Adult Education • They are educating adults through workshops, internships, and the ECHO community on global agriculture • It is also important to study because not only is it Adult Education but it is also Christian adult education, which is what we are going for in this class.
