Progression in Calculation • Giving children a context to work in is crucial at all stages so they have a clear understanding of what addition and subtraction actually means. • For example – I have 3 green apples and 2 red apples. How many apples have I got altogether? • We vary the context of these problems to include measure and money as well. • Addition can be done in any order - larger number first.

Helping at Home • Practise reading, writing and ordering numbers. • Practise counting forwards and backwards – particularly backwards • Look for numbers in the environment • Count the knives and forks – how many are there altogether. What if I took 3 away?
