1) Sophia • For Sophia, English is her second language. She wants to succeed and goes to a friend who speaks better English. Her friend goes through her whole essay, correcting the language all the way through.
2) Harry • Harry integrates a chunk of handout material from his last years work into his essay. He alters some words to fit better and splits the material with two sections of his own writing.
3) Joe • Joe has an essay to prepare. He meticulously reads books in the library but is not sure from which text the ideas have come and which ideas were his own. He lists the range of books he thinks he used in the reference list.
4) Louise • Louise finds some information on a website which says exactly what she wants to say. It is six lines of text which she puts into quotation marks. She cuts and pastes it but mistakenly forgets to change the original font. She cites it in the text and puts the web address in the reference list with the date last accessed.
Turnitin Overview • A web service that enables institutions and staff to carry out electronic comparison of students' work against electronic sources including other students' work. • Prevents and detects plagiarism by comparing submitted papers to billions of pages of content located on the internet and their own proprietary databases. • Results of comparisons are displayed in custom "Originality Reports" which are easily accessed by lecturers logging into their Turnitin account.
