  2. Parental Engagement Research has highlighted there’s a direct link between parental involvement and children’s performance in school. One survey, commissioned by Becta , of 1,000 children and 1,000 parents of children came to the following conclusion: “Researchers have found a consistent link between increasing parental engagement in a students’ learning and improved attendance, behaviour and achievement – the parent/carer’s influence on a child’s learning is more important than the schools.”

Fulfilling Your Child’s Potential10 steps to success • Support the school in supporting your child • Discuss progress with them • Encourage them to get grade 1’s (outstanding) for their Effort, Homework & Attitude • Take decisive action when 3, 4 or 5 grades regularly crop up. • Come to Parents’ Consultation evenings & Progress Review Days

  4. 10 Steps to Success • Monitor homework • Help them to set & achieve targets for improvement • Sign your child’s planner on a weekly basis • Ensure your son or daughter prepares fully for the main examination periods • Ensure the best possible attendance for your son or daughter

Controlled Assessments • Controlled assessment replaced coursework in GCSE subjects from September 2009. • Controlled assessment is an integral and important part of the GCSE courses • Controlled assessment makes up a proportion of the students final grade at the end of the course. • Controlled assessment is defined as work assigned to and completed by a student during a course of study. • It is designed to measure skills that are not effectively assessed by external assessment.

  8. New Banding Structure • Band A – 7 periods Maths 7 periods English 1 period ICT (2 in year 11) 4 optional GCSEs or BTEC & 2 GCSEs • Band B – 8 periods of Maths 8 periods English 4 periods ICT 3 optional GCSEs or BTEC & 1 GCSE

  14. New AQA GCSE Specifications • Modular and can re-take units • Take one Literature exam in June year 10 and the second in Year 11 • One Language exam in year 11. Take twice if needed • GCSE controlled assessments after Christmas

  17. The benefits of this new approach and specification • Coursework not going home, where students could receive extra help. All written in school in controlled conditions. • Fairer system that encourages individual ideas. • Modular units can be taken early and re-taken. More in line with Maths and Science.

  18. How can you help your child? • Encourage your child to read and take them to the theatre. • We will study ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘An Inspector Calls’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ over the three years, and a variety of poetry. • Use Kerboodle and moodle and www.aqa.org.uk

The New GCSE Mathematics • The New GCSE has been extended to include mathematics on a functional level • Functional mathematics relates to how maths applies and relates to the real world • Students will now be partly examined in this way • It is crucial your son/daughter reflect on the relevance of maths to everyday life

Pathway 1 – Most able • GCSE Mathematics • GCSE Statistics (includes a controlled assessment) • Additional Maths • A Free Standing Maths Qualification • Worth valuable UCAS points • Sits between GCSE and AS Level • Unit 2 will be examined in Nov 2010 (Worth 33%) • Unit 1 and GCSE Statistics will be examined in June 2011 (Worth 27%) • Unit 3 and Additional Maths will be examined in June 2012 (Worth 40%) • All examined with the AQA exam board

Pathway 3 – Mid to low ability • GCSE Mathematics • We can give time and support to ensure that your son/daughter gets the best grade they possibly can • An extra lesson a fortnight is dedicated to focusing on Functional Maths skills • Unit 1 will be examined in Nov 2010 (Worth 30%) • Unit 2 will be examined in June 2011 (Worth 30%) • Unit 3 will be examined in June 2012 (Worth 40%) • All examined with the Edexcel exam board
