Warm Up • What do you know about Ukraine? • Where is it located? • What is the capital of the country?
Capital: KievLanguage: UkrainianReligion: Orthodox ChristianityIndependence from the Soviet Union: August 24, 1991
Climate: Moderate Continental and Subtropical in the Southern Crimean coastMountains: the Carpathians in the West and the Crimean Mountains in the South
National Culture • Ukraine can boast of rich ancient traditions and unique culture. • Ukrainian cuisine, music, art and craft are known all over the world.
Translation Studies • Translation erases the borders between nations and cultures. • Due to globalization and mass migration of people from all over the world intercultural communication becomes more and more important. • It is only through translation that most of us know Homer, Sophocles, the authors of the Bible, Dante, Rabelais, Cervantes, Goethe, Tolstoy, Proust, Kafka, Mishima, Garcia Marquez, and a number of other writers that we take for granted.
Translation vs. Interpretation Being bilingual allows you to choose one of these professions: Translator Interpreter (written translation (Oral translation of negotiations, of articles, scripts, speeches, presentations. Usually reports, cards, books, is done either consecutively or web sites, etc.) simultaneously).
Why become a translator? You can easily share your culture, literature, traditions with other nations. • If you are bilingual • If you like learning foreign languages • If you like working with texts • If you are eager to deal with foreign cultures and learn something new about them while translating.
Rewards and Challenges • Flexible work schedule • Opportunities for personal growth • Possibilities of travelling • Cross-cultural communication The biggest challenges are your • creativity, • self-motivation, • ability to work independently • and meet deadlines.
Translating the Untranslatable • Pysanka (Ukr.) – a painted Easter egg • Vyshyvanka (Ukr.) – an embroidered blouze or t-shirt • Potluck (Am.) – a meal for which every guest contributes some food or dish • What about your culture? Any untranslatable notions?
Activity • Have a look at the handout and translate the text into your language.
and finally… Translation can only make different cultures closer but it will never bring them together. For example: What do you imagine when you hear the word CHURCH? Ukrainians see something like this:
Americans imagine this: • For a Chinese person it will be like this: Translation does not always guarantee full understanding, and still, its power makes the world smaller and people closer.
