Basics of Project Management • Defining • Clarifying objectives of the project • Roles, effective teamwork. • Plan • Tasks and timescale - dividing the project up into manageable stages • Monitor • Controlling the project through its stages using the project definition & plan • Review • Risk register – identify risks and strategy to manage them

For a volunteer • Appreciate the challenges of the organisation, resources/time/priorities/IT knowledge • Apply the methods you know from the corporate sector/training but appropriately • Be realistic about your own time/organisation’s input • Don’t over commit/contingency • Keep notes • Handover • Celebrate the learning and the successes

For the contact in the VCS • Set aside time • Know what you need – project initiation document • Listen but also question (see point 2) • Respond quickly to requests for info • Involve the volunteer in the organisation • Keep in touch • Keep ownership • Frustrations may happen – celebrate success! • If you need an ear – iT4C
