  5. Lesson • Chuck close is an American artist known for his Photorealistic paintings. • PHOTOREALISM: a type of art-making that blurs the distinction between photography and painting

  6. lesson • From an early age, Close had to face several forms of adversity including: • Severe dyslexia • Unpopularity in school • A neuromuscular condition that prevented him from playing sports • The death of his father at age 11 • Despite adversity, Close found comfort in art.

  7. Lesson • At age 14, Close went to a Jackson Pollock exhibition, where he was inspired by the artist’s unique style of painting. • It was at this moment that Close decided to become an artist. Jackson Pollock Full Fathom Five (1947)

Lesson • Close graduated from the University of Washington in 1962, and moved on to Yale to acquire his Master of Fine Arts. • Although he was inspired by Abstract Expressionism, he developed his own photorealistic style while at Yale. • He reproduced polaroid pictures on a large scale. He used a technique he named “knitting.”

Lesson • Close is confined to the use of a wheelchair due to the rupture of his spinal artery in 1988. • Although considered a quadriplegic, he regained some use of his limbs through physical therapy. • Close tapes paint brushes to his hands and uses rotating canvases to approach his large works.

  11. Lesson • Despite numerous disabilities and hardships, Chuck Close is a renowned and respected artist that maintains a positive attitude.
