Pilot AAA PROMS Audit M Kadam, C Martin, T Marchant, R Wilson, D Gerrard, P Leopold, P Chong West Surrey and North Hampshire Regional Vascular Service Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Surrey GU16 7UJ
What are PROMS? • Patient Reported Outcome Measures • Quality of care measurement from a patient’s perspective • Self-completed questionnaires • No disease specific PROM for AAA yet
The initiative • 20 patients who have had an elective or emergency open repair of their AAA were sent the questionnaires. • 16 responded (80%) • All responses were anonymous.
What information did we collect? • 9 Domains assessed • Admissions • emergency • elective • Doctors • opportunities to talk to a doctor • confidence • Nurses • Care and treatment • information giving • fears • Operation • Before • After care - Visiting visiting hours - Discharge - delays - understanding follow- up care - Overall - About you
Admissions • 12 Elective admissions • 4 Emergency
Operation • 100% were explained risk / benefits prior to the operation.
Conclusions • Positives: • Patient centered care • Involved through out • Pre-op & post-op care was commended • Negatives: • Delayed discharges in up to 25% • Post discharge care • Explanation of new medication & side effects • Meals
Limitations & Future plans • Anonimised data not capable of identifying factors affecting good or bad scores. • Lengthy questionnaires! • Interval between completing questionnaires and discharge variable in the pilot study • We recommend the use PROMs as an adjunctive outcome measure for future AAA intervention studies. • Locally a prospective study is underway.
