What is the agriculture industry? How products and byproducts are made MSAGED 7-1 Written by Melissa Moulton
How many steps does it take to make 1 single product? 1st - A farmer must grow the plants and/or raise the animals. 2nd - The business must supply materials or services to the farmers to get and keep their businesses running. 3rd – The farmer must sell his materials to a business/ factory that will turn the goods into finished products. 4th – The product will be processed, packaged, and labeled. 5th – The manufacturing company will hire an advertising company to market the finished products so consumers will buy it. 6th – The product will be shipped and stocked onto stores across the world.
Doesn’t seem like much? • Think of all the people that it takes to operate each of the different steps. • Factories don’t hire only 1 worker, they hire hundreds. • How many truck drivers do you see on the roads? • Don’t forget to count the researchers and developers that look for ways to improve the product so it can be sold with a different label (ex-reduced fat)
4 Main Areas of the Ag Industry • Production • Farmers producing the food • Processing • Changing food and fiber into useable products • Distribution • Moving products to market • Marketing • The selling of products
