  1. How To UseMrV’sSums TableFor Addition Table Terminology Adding Two 1-Digit Numbers Adding a 1-Digit Number to a Longer Number Handling Zeroes in Addition

  2. Sums Table Terminology: Row, Cell, Addends, Sum There are 9 table Rows,Row 1 through Row 9 Each Cellholds 3 numbers:The Sum(big number) and its 2 Addends For example, this is Row 5: 6 5 In this Cell, the Sum is 11 and theAddends are 5 + 6. Each Row has 10 Cells,Cell 0 thru Cell 9. For example, this is Cell 6 inRow 5.

  3. Adding Two 1-digit Numbers 7 + 8=? 7 + 8 1. Find the Rowfor the first Addend In this case, it’s Row 7: 3. The big number above them is their Sum 7 plus 8is 15 15 2. Look across the Row until you see both Addends on the bottom In this case, it’s 7 + 8

  4. Ok, let’s try a few: Click when you find the Sum 7 + 9= 7+ 9 9 + 4= 11 9+ 4 11 5 + 6= 5+ 6 16 3 + 8= 3+ 8 13

  5. Two-step Adding Most people know simple sums like: 3 + 4 = 7 and adding a digit to numbers that end in 0: 20 + 7 = 27 So 42 + 3 = 40 + 2 + 3 = 40 + 5 = 45 but, WHY? You try: 26 + 3 = 20 + 9 = 29 7 + 61 = 60 + 8 = 68 Sometimes, there is a Carry: 34 + 7 = 30 + 11 = 41 You try: 79 + 5 = 70 + 14 = 84 6 + 38 = 30 + 14 = 44 8 + 22 = 20 + 10 = 30 95 + 8 = 90 + 13 = 103

  6. Adding a 1-digit Number to any 2-digit Number 25 + 9=? 5 + 9 1. Find the Row: Use 1stAddend’s units digit 3. Add the Addend’s tens digit to the tens digit of the Sum (do in your head) In this case, it’s Row 5: 14 +2 =34 2 added to the tens digit of 14 makes 34 the Final Sum 2. Find the sum of the Addendunits digits In this case, it’s 5 + 9 = 14
