Missed-Approach or Go-around: A Maneuver conducted by pilot when instrument or visual approach cannot be completed to a landing. .
Go Around Statistics Go-arounds occur with an average rate of 1-3 per 1000 approaches. There is a large variation of go-around rates among different aircraft operators and operational environments.
Causes for a missed-approach - Go Around • ++a late runway or approach procedure change • ++an inadequate approach briefing • ++challenging prevailing wind velocity • ++inappropriate energy management • ++inadequate traffic spacing • ++unfamiliar approach - maybe a straight in non-precision or circling • ++inappropriate aircraft configuration • ++runway surface condition • ++a predicted late touchdown point • ++unexpected runway occupancy after clearance to land • ++degraded aircraft systems status • ++the effect of fatigue • ++unstabilized approach
Having decided to go-around is not the end of decision making! Executing go around places the pilots and the aircraft in a new situation, perhaps one that is rarely practiced and which contains new threats. Over 60% of go-arounds introduce increased risk
Go Around; Normal Procedure or Abnormal Procedure?
Better training is needed! Raw data scanning of instruments. Manual flying skills. Monitoring duties of not flying pilot. Always expect and prepare plan B. Clear SOPs for Go-Arounds from other than DA/not fully configured aircraft.

Failure to note tailplaneposition If it is alreadyfullynose up (typically following autopilotdisconnectat low speed), there is no way the elevator will contain the pitch up from full power from underwing engines
Other Factors • ++Loss of seperation • ++Unexpected wake turbulance • ++CFIT • ++Adverse weather • ++Loss of control especially in dark night or IMC where spatial disorientation is most likely • ++Reduced fuel endurance
