  1. Biomedical Research Objective 1 Biomedical Research

  2. Definition of Biomedical Research It involves the work done by scientists from many fields to improve the health and well being of humans and animals.

  3. In what ways can biomedical research improve the health and well being of humans and animals? Through the development and implementation of new and improved practices in clinical medicine.

  4. In what areas of medicine is biomedical research being utilized? Practically any area of medicine that can be thought of is being biomedically researched. Examples are: 1.Public health research, including epidemiology 2.Preventive medicine and behavioral health 3.Cancer research

  5. Biomedical Research Examples Continued: 4. Aging research 5. Endocrinology, including neuroendocrinology and diabetes research 6. Cellular biology; molecular biology 7. Pharmacology, including psychopharmacology 8. Neuroscience 9. Genetics 10. Virology  11. Premature births, including birth defects 12. Orthopedic research, including spinal injuries

  6. Types or Stages of Biomedical Research Basic Applied Clinical

  7. Basic Research • Conducted to increase fundamental knowledge • Not directed toward solving any particular problem • Provides building blocks for other types of research

  8. Applied Research • Directed toward specific objectives – for example, development of new drug, treatment, or surgical procedure • Conducted with animals, non-animals methods (computer models or tissue cultures), and humans (Photo from Newsweek Nov. 19, 2008)

  9. Clinical Research • Used when other forms of research have taken place • Used to test potential drugs and treatments in humans • Builds on what is done in basic and applied stages • Broad variety of activities and areas of study

  10. Activities and areas of study in clinical research: • Human clinical trials • Psychosocial and behavioral research • Disease control research
