  3. Summary Mrs. Morel, a coal miner's wife, paid all her attention to her children ,especially Paul. At 16, Paul met a 15-year-old girl Miriam Leivers whose inner charm attracted Paul, but Mrs. Morel did not care for Miriam. At 20, Paul made acquaintance with Clara, who was separated from her husband. At the request of his mother, Paul gave up Miriam temporarily.

  4. Mrs. Morel's possessive love made Paul unable to make up his mind whether to choose Miriam or Clara The death of Mrs. Morel left Paul lost and helpless. • Clara had returned to her husband and Miriam turned out not to be the person Paul wanted. After a lengthy inner struggle, Paul found himself able to make his own life anew.
